NLC Convention: The Future of Millennial America is an agenda-setting conference for our generation to develop ideas, receive training, and make connections to better ourselves and communities.  The Convention will occur over three-full days in July, with policy panels, training breakouts, Spark! Talks and inspirational keynotes. Attendees should come with an open and inquisitive mind, ready to take what they learned home to be the change agents we need.

Why should I attend NLC Convention?

Often referred to as the most inspirational event in the NLC calendar, attendees first and foremost network and learn from one another.  With an expected attendance of 500 progressive millennials across from across the country, this will be one of the largest gatherings of our generational leaders ever.

NLC is an inclusive community and the NLC Convention is open to the entire progressive community.  We are developing an agenda for Millennial America, and therefore encourage all interested parties to attend, learn more about the issues and priorities of America’s largest voting bloc and future leaders, and create an action plan to change our communities.

When and where will NLC Convention be held?

The 2018 NLC Convention will be held from July 19th - July 22nd in Houston, Texas.

The NLC Convention events will be hosted at the Houstonian Hotel.  Set on 18 acres of forest near Houston’s Galleria district, surrounded by running trails, three swimming pools, a private fitness center, the Houstonian was ranked as America’s 9th best hotel in 2010.

The Thursday opening reception will be held onsite at the Houstonian’s Manor House, a historical house set on the hotel property where the 1990 G7 Summit was held, with the Summit Treaty being signed in the Botanical Room.

On Saturday night, the annual NLC Awards Gala will be held at the Crystal Ballroom at the Historic Rice Hotel. At the site of the original Capitol of the Republic of Texas, the Rice has been at the center of historic events in Texas since 1837. The Crystal Ballroom played host to the announcement of plans to construct the Astrodome, The "State of the City" address for over 30 mayors, and the outlining of the official formation of NASA. It hosted the 1928 Democratic National Convention, where Franklin Roosevelt announced the nomination of Al Smith to the Presidency. John F. Kennedy dined at the Rice, where Jacqueline Kennedy gave her only political address in history the night before their fateful trip to Dallas.

First you should speak with your Chapter leadership regarding who from your Chapter is attending.  Often times you can coordinate with other attendees from your home chapter. NLC has created a google forum to meet other attendees.  Please join the forum here and post if you are looking for a roommate. Please note, splitting payment for hotel rooms is managed by individuals and not by the organization.

Are there any subsidies for costs and how does the Community Fund work?

NLC provides limited subsidies for our most senior volunteers (Chapter Directors). Individual chapters may have set aside funds in their local budgets.  Please speak to your local Chapter Directors for more information. Please note that these funds may only be applied to room costs at the Houstonian and not airfare, other travel incidentals or registration, unless otherwise noted by your local chapter leadership.

Additionally, NLC is debuting a Community Fund.  During checkout, attendees have the option of donating $15 to the Community Fund to offset the costs for community members to attend NLC Convention.  [Click here to register] Community Funds will go to offset hotel room costs on a need-basis for those who are contributing to NLC or the NLC Convention at a deeper level, i.e. local Executive Board members, Spark! Talk presenters, community presenters, etc.  More details on how to apply for these funds will be released at a later date. [Click here to register]

Can my local Chapter pay for me to attend NLC Convention?

Many chapters have set aside money in their discretionary budgets to support chapter members in attending NLC Convention. Please check with your local chapter leadership on their local application process.

I am receiving assistance from my chapter, what are my next steps?

All local chapter assistance will be used to offset Houstonian hotel room costs for NLC Convention.  Therefore, if you are chosen to receive assistance by your local leadership team, you must still register for NLC Retreat for an All Access Pass. [Click here to register]

All those receiving assistance through their local teams (not Chapter Directors) must still reserve their own room directly through the hotel in the same process as all attendees.  Instructions on transferring that reservation or applying assistance will be supplied closer to NLC Convention. [Click here to book your hotel room]

Additionally, all community members receiving any assistance for NLC Convention will be required to sign an Memorandum of Understanding with New Leaders Council affirming that their assistance is contingent on complete attendance at NLC Convention programming.  That will be supplied closer to NLC Convention. Information on what complete attendance is will be provided at the same time as the document.
