What should I expect during NLC Convention?

NLC Convention: Building a Bridge to 2020 and Beyond is an agenda-setting conference for our generation to develop ideas, receive training, and make connections to better ourselves and communities.  The Convention will occur over three-full days in July, with policy panels, training breakouts, Spark! Talks and inspirational keynotes. Attendees should come with an open and inquisitive mind, ready to take what they learned home to be the change agents we need.

 

Why should I attend NLC Convention?

Often referred to as the most inspirational event in the NLC calendar, attendees first and foremost network and learn from one another.  With an expected attendance of 500 progressive millennials across from across the country, this will be one of the largest gatherings of our generational leaders ever.

 

Who is welcome to attend NLC Convention?

NLC is an inclusive community and the NLC Convention is open to the entire progressive community.  Since we are focusing on 2020 and beyond, all interested parties are encouraged to attend, learn from the national progressive community and dive into the issues and priorities that affect the Millennial generation.  

 

When and where will NLC Convention be held?

The 2019 NLC Convention will be held from July 25 – 27 in Des Moines, Iowa.  

 

The NLC Convention events will be hosted at the Des Moines Marriott Downtown, 700 Grand Ave., Des Moines. 

 

When should I arrive in Des Moines?

Programming will start at 11 AM on Thursday, July 25 at the Des Moines Marriott Downtown.  Attendees should look for flights early on Thursday to ensure they don’t miss any of the action.  

 

Hotel

 

How should I reserve my hotel for NLC Convention?

New Leaders Council's hotel room block is now closed.  For those who have already reserved a hotel through New Leaders Council, you should have received an email regarding your rooming situations at the Des Moines Marriott Downtown.  

 

Transportation

 

Which airport is in Des Moines?

Des Moines has one airport: DSM. 

 

How far is the airport to the Des Moines Marriott Downtown?

The Des Moines Marriott Downtown is approximately a 15 minute drive from the Des Moines International Airport. 

 

Will there be transportation from the airport?

New Leaders Council will be running a shuttle from the Des Moines Airport to the Des Moines Marriott Downtown with pick ups at 10 AM, 10:45 AM, 11:30 AM, 12:15 PM, 1 PM, 1:45 PM on WED ONLY.  More information will be sent directly to Convention attendees.  

The Des Moines Marriott Downtown has a shuttle to and from the airport from 4:30 AM – 11 PM daily for those who are staying at the hotel and are arriving or departing outside of the above times.  You can call the hotel at 515-245-5500 to book the shuttle.  

Uber, Lyft and taxis also go to and from the airport.  

 

What airlines fly into DSM? 

The following airlines fly into DSM: Allegiant, American Airlines, Delta, Frontier, Southwest and United. 

 

When should I arrive in Des Moines?

Programming will start at 11 AM on Thursday, July 25 at the Des Moines Marriott Downtown.  Attendees should look for flights early on Thursday to ensure they don’t miss any of the action.  

 

When should I schedule my flight home?

Official programming will end Saturday, July 27 in the evening after our Awards dinner.  

 

Planning to drive?

We will have a limited number of day parking passes, which will be reserved for the Des Moines chapter and speakers. Additionally, there will be overnight parking passes available to chapters who carpool with a certain number of attendees.  Those chapters should reach out directly to NLC staff for more information. Please note, no free parking at the Des Moines Marriott Downtown will be available for guests staying at other hotels.

 

Convention Logistics

 

What should I wear during NLC Convention?

Daytime sessions and Thursday night Welcome Reception are business attire.  The Saturday night Awards Gala is cocktail attire. 

 

I have dietary restrictions.  How can I ensure that there will be food I can eat?

As we near the NLC Convention, all registered attendees will receive an entrance survey where they can provide dietary restrictions. NLC will do its absolute best to ensure that we meet those restrictions, but the onus is on the individual to inform the organization of those restrictions and allergies, as meals will be ordered in advance and for those who have identified.

 

Are there evening activities during Convention?

NLC Convention is known for its after hour events, attendees have fun both during the day and at night.  The All Access Pass includes access to the Thursday Welcome Reception and the Saturday Awards dinner. The local Des Moines team will also have an after hour gathering for attendees after the Awards dinner on Saturday night.

 

When will an agenda be available?

As speakers are set, NLC will publish the agenda.  Please return to the NLC Convention site for further updates.

 

Will there be access to gender inclusive bathrooms?

Attendees are encouraged to utilize the restrooms they are most comfortable with on the main conference floor.  These will be gender inclusive bathrooms.

Costs and Payment

 

How much does NLC Convention cost?

 

Last minute registration for an All Access Pass for NLC Convention is $425 and includes all NLC Convention programming on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the Thursday Welcome Reception, and Saturday Awards dinner. 

 

Are there any subsidies for costs?

NLC provides limited subsidies for our most senior volunteers (Chapter Directors). Individual chapters may have set aside funds in their local budgets.  Please speak to your local Chapter Directors for more information. Please note that these funds may only be applied to room costs at the Marriott and not airfare, other travel incidentals or registration, unless otherwise noted by your local chapter leadership.

 

Can my local Chapter pay for me to attend NLC Convention?

Many chapters have set aside money in their discretionary budgets to support chapter members in attending NLC Convention. Please check with your local chapter leadership on their local application process.

 

I am receiving assistance from my chapter, what are my next steps?

All local chapter assistance will be used to offset Marriott hotel room costs for NLC Convention.  Therefore, if you are chosen to receive assistance by your local leadership team, you must still register for NLC Retreat for an All Access Pass. 

 

What is included in the cost of NLC Convention?

The All Access Pass provides attendees with full access to the NLC Convention including programming on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, including a grab and go breakfast and lunch; the Thursday Welcome Reception, including light hors d'oeuvres, and Saturday Awards Gala, including dinner.
