About NLC Convention

What should I expect during 2020 NLC National Convention?

This summer, nearly 400 community influencers, change agents, and next-generation leaders will gather in the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection to hone their skills, share ideas and inspirations, and cultivate a sense of community and connection that will drive their work for the year to come. LOVE NLC is more than a Convention theme, but a mantra of how our #NLCFamily connects with one another, about our collective energy towards creating fairer and more equitable systems, and about our deep love for our communities.The Convention will occur over three days in August 2020, with policy panels, training breakouts, Spark! Talks and inspirational keynotes. Attendees should come with an open and inquisitive mind, ready to take what they learned home to be the change agents we need.

Why should I attend NLC National Convention?

Often referred to as the most inspirational event in the NLC calendar, attendees first and foremost network and learn from one another. Many attendees say this is the first time they recognized the impact that the national network can have on their personal and professional lives. With an expected attendance of 400 progressive millennials from across the country, this will be one of the year’s largest gatherings of rising generational and progressive leaders.

Who is welcome to attend NLC National Convention?

As an inclusive community, NLC National Convention is open to progressive leaders. All interested parties are encouraged to attend, learn from the national progressive community and dive into the issues and priorities that affect the Millennial generation.

When and where will NLC National Convention be held?

The 2020 NLC National Convention will be held from August 6-8, 2020 in Philadelphia, PA. While events will occur throughout the City of Philadelphia, the Doubletree by Hilton Philadelphia Center City is our official host hotel.

Where else will events for NLC National Convention occur?

Thursday Chapter Director session will take place at the Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters Hall, 1803 Spring Garden St, Philadelphia, PA 19130 Friday Sessions will take place at the Wanamaker Building, 100 E Penn Square, Philadelphia, PA 19107. With morning and afternoon sessions on the 10th Floor Pennsylvania Bar Institute and lunch occuring at the Crystal Tea Room on the 9th Floor. Saturday sessions will be at the Doubletree by Hilton Philadelphia Center City, 237 S Broad St, Philadelphia, PA 19107.

When should I arrive in Philadelphia?

For general attendees, programming will start with offsite adventures at 1:30 pm on Thursday, August 6 from the Doubletree. Attendees should look for flights early on Thursday to ensure they don’t miss any of the action. For Chapter Directors, programming will begin promptly at 9 AM on Thursday, August 6 at the Eastern Atlantic States Council of Carpenters Hall. Therefore, all PY21 Chapter Directors and PY21 NPC members should be prepared to arrive on Wednesday, August 5.

What is included in the cost of NLC National Convention?

The All Access Pass provides attendees with full access to the NLC National Convention including programming on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, including a grab and go breakfast and lunch on Friday and Saturday; and NLC Awards Gala, including dinner.


How should I reserve my hotel for NLC National Convention?

For Convention attendees, New Leaders Council has a block of reserved rooms at the Doubletree by Hilton Philadelphia Center City, located at 237 S Broad St, Philadelphia, PA 19107. This rate is available only until June 30, 2020. Most attendees will stay from Thursday, August 6 - Sunday, August 9. With the exception of PY21 Chapter Directors and PY21 NPC members, all attendees should book their room directly with the Doubletree through this link. The NLC reduced hotel room rate is $149* per night for up to two people in the room. Triple occupancy is $159* per night; quad occupancy is $169* per night. *Plus Pennsylvania Occupancy Tax and Philadelphia Hospitality Investment Levy. All those booking directly with the hotel will be responsible for full hotel payment prior to departure with individual credit being established at check in. All hotel guests - whether reserving a room directly with the Doubletree or through NLC - will be responsible for a $50 per night incidental hold by credit card at hotel check in. Please note your bank’s policy on hotel incidental holds when using a debit card.


What are the best transportation options to get to the NLC National Convention?

Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) is the closest airport to Philadelphia. Amtrak services Philadelphia through the Northeast Corridor with stops from Boston to Virginia Beach. Amtrak stops at Philadelphia 30th Street Station. Additionally, NJ Transit and SEPTA regional trains provide affordable options from NY Penn Station to 30th Street Station.

What airlines fly into PHL?

The following airlines fly into PHL: Aer Lingus, Air Canada, Alaska, American Airlines, American Eagle, Delta, Frontier, Icelandair, Jetblue, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways, Southwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines, Sun Country Airlines, and United.

How do I get from the PHL to the Doubletree by Hilton Philadelphia Center City?

Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) provides train service between Center City and the Airport on the Airport Regional Rail Line. Trains run every 30 minutes and operate from 4:52 am to 11:52 pm (Center City to Airport) and from 5:07 am to 12:30 am (Airport to Center City). Stations on the Airport Regional Rail Line include Terminal E/F, Terminal C/D, Terminal B, Terminal A (East), Eastwick, University City, 30th Street, and three Center City stations along Market Street. All stations on the Airport Line are wheelchair accessible. The closest Center City station along Airport Regional Rail Line to the Doubletree is Suburban Station with a ride time of 24 minutes. One-way tickets cost $7. PHL Ride Share pick up is located on the Arrivals Road in the outer lanes. Due to the public transportation options, NLC will be neither providing transportation nor reimbursements towards travel to and from the airport for 2020 NLC National Convention. Please plan accordingly.

How do I get from the 30th Street Station to the Doubletree by Hilton Philadelphia Center City?

Attendees can take the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) Market Frankfort Line towards Frankfort to 15th Street Station. The Doubletree is a .4 mile walk from the 15th Street Station. Or attendees can transfer to the Southbound (towards NRG Station) Broad Street line (Orange line) and exit at Walnut/Locust. The Doubletree is a .1 mile walk from the Walnut/Locust station. Ride share is also available from the 30th Street Station. Due to the public transportation options, NLC will be neither providing transportation nor reimbursements towards travel to and from the station for 2020 NLC National Convention. Please plan accordingly.

When should I schedule my travel home?

Official programming will end in the evening of Saturday, August 8, with most guests departing in the afternoon of August 9.

Can I drive?

The Doubletree has limited self-parking available for $30 per night and valet parking available for $44 per night for hotel guests. There are public paid parking garages near the Doubletree. To encourage use of the public transportation options, NLC will not be providing reimbursements for parking for 2020 NLC National Convention. Please plan accordingly.

Convention Logistics

I have dietary restrictions. How can I ensure that there will be food I can eat?

As we near the NLC National Convention, all registered attendees will receive an entrance survey where they can provide dietary restrictions. NLC will do its absolute best to ensure that we meet those restrictions, but the onus is on the individual to inform the organization of those restrictions and allergies, as meals will be ordered in advance and for those who have identified.

Are there evening activities during Convention?

NLC National Convention is known for its after hour events, attendees have fun both during the day and at night. The All Access Pass includes access to Thursday Offsite Adventures, programming on Friday and Saturday, and the NLC Awards dinner. The NLC Convention Logistics Committee is working on other opportunities for engagement and after-hour activities for attendees.

When will an agenda be available?

As speakers are set, NLC will publish the agenda. Please return to the NLC National Convention site for further updates.

Will there be access to gender inclusive bathrooms?

NLC will make every effort to ensure that there are gender inclusive bathrooms throughout the Convention. Attendees are encouraged to utilize the restrooms they are most comfortable with.

Costs and Payment

How much does NLC National Convention cost?

Through April 30, NLC is offering an Early Bird Convention rate of $275. From May 1 - June 30, general all-access passes will be available for $325. Late registration begins on July 1 at $375 and then last minute registration will be $425 starting on August 1. Starting on May 1, NLC will also offer day-passes and individual event tickets. Prices will be forthcoming. Additionally, NLC has a monthly payment plan available to ease the cost burden of the event. Check out options here.

I can no longer attend. What is NLC’s refund policy for National Convention registration?

Requests received prior to April 1, 2019 - 100% of amount paid. Requests received prior to June 1, 2019 - 50% of amount paid. Requests received prior to July 10, 2019 - 25% of amount paid. There will be no refunds for cancellations after July 10, 2019. Refunds will be processed within 15 days of filing out this form.

Are there any scholarships to cover costs?

New Leaders Council will develop a scholarship program for NLC alumni and fellows to apply for full registration support for Convention. In January of 2020, a Committee of NLC volunteer and staff leadership will form to determine the application, criteria, and selection process for the NLC Convention scholarship program. Scholarships will be provided for full registration support and be determined on the basis of need and merit.

Can my local Chapter pay for me to attend NLC National Convention?

Many chapters have set aside money in their discretionary budgets to support chapter members in attending NLC National Convention. Please note Chapter-level funds may only be applied to room costs at the Doubletree by Hilton Philadelphia Center City and not airfare, other travel incidentals or registration. All registration sponsors will be handled through the national scholarship process (see above).

I am receiving assistance from my chapter, what are my next steps?

All local chapter assistance will be used to offset Doubletree by Hilton Philadelphia Center CIty hotel room costs for NLC National Convention. Therefore, if you are chosen to receive assistance by your local leadership team, you must still register for NLC Retreat for an All Access Pass.

What is a Spark! Talk?

Spark! Talks are a fast-paced presentation where a speaker gets 5 minutes to share their thoughts and viewpoints. Each presenter is accompanied by 20 slides, which automatically advance every 15 seconds, allowing speakers to be prepared, concise and thoughtful. This format allows NLC Convention attendees to learn about your passions and community involvement in a quick and informative way.

How do I present a Spark! Talk?

NLC Convention Spark! Talks are highly competitive, with often only 25 percent of applicants chosen to share their Spark! Talk at Convention. Applicants should take the application process seriously and thoughtfully.

If chosen, do I receive compensation or free NLC Convention registration?

All Spark! Talk presenters must pay their own way to NLC Convention, including registration fees. This is an opportunity to promote yourself and should see this as an opportunity to advance your own development.
