James Harris is an award-winning technical recruiter with an emphasis on diversity and inclusion in the tech industry. Through his work within Fortune 500 companies including Amazon Web Services, Tesla, Google and Hotwire/Expedia, James’ leadership and innovative recruitment strategies have transformed the way companies approach diversity and inclusion in recruitment. With a focus on equity in employment opportunities, James’ expertise has enabled companies to identify, evaluate, and hire top talent with a new perspective.
As an influential thought leader in diversity recruitment, James regularly advises and leads training sessions on unconscious bias, intercultural competence and strengthening diversity recruiting strategies. As Senior Diversity Program Manager for the Talent Acquisition team at Amazon Web Services, he launched a series of virtual sessions addressing the company’s commitment to diversity, effective interviewing and engagement techniques, and the opportunity for open conversations with diverse leaders within Amazon.
In addition to increasing diversity in hiring practices, James has spearheaded the development and implementation of inclusive programs to support employees. At Tesla, James founded Black at Tesla, the first ethnic-based employee resource group in the company’s history. In 2014 and 2015, he received the Trusted Partner at Tesla Award in recognition of his significant role in expanding the company’s strategic partnerships. During his time with Google, he was hand-picked to serve on the inaugural Multidisciplinary Diversity Sourcing team. Within the first year, the team achieved remarkable success by hiring a record number of diverse engineers within Google.
James believes that diversity and inclusion are integral to achieving equity. He boldly pushes companies to maximize their ability to develop cutting-edge products, retain high-performing employees and attract the best talent through effective diversity and inclusion practices. His desire to progressively push for what’s right started long before his career in recruiting. As a student at Florida A&M University, James served as the liaison to the Rainbow PUSH Coalition and co-founded a non-profit organization that provides college and career counseling and programmatic mentorship to middle and high school students.
James currently serves as Director for New Leaders Council Dallas, where he recently secured a $50,000 grant to support the organization’s leadership programming- the largest grant award the chapter has received. He is also actively involved with Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., where he serves as a mentor, and he leads volunteer efforts with One Community Church for an 800-member volunteer group.
James received his Bachelor of Science degree in marketing and a Master of Business Administration degree from Florida A&M University. He currently lives in the Dallas, Texas area with his wife and son. When he is not fighting the good fight, you can find James playing (attempting) golf, watching basketball, and keeping his toddler son’s fingers out of electrical sockets.
