Policy and Budget Advisor, Office of State Senator Patricia D. Jehlen
Respond, Rebuild, Rebound: Communities in a COVID Era
Mark Martinez is a Policy and Budget Advisor for State Senator Patricia D. Jehlen focusing on the environment, housing, economic development and criminal justice reform. He is originally from Western Mass and got his start in activism organizing around the #BlackLivesMatter movement while an undergraduate student at Western New England University. He majored in political science and, while completing his degree, interned on national level policy campaigns and on state-level Senate campaigns. It is through that work that Mark found his real passion of state-level government and advocacy and developed his belief that state and local politics is really what drives change.
After undergrad, Mark moved to Boston to pursue his law degree at Northeastern University School of Law. While in law school, Mark was chair of the Black Law Students Association, the Latin American Law Students Association, and the Queer Caucus. While in law school, he helped organize around a grad student union and around better educational environments for marginalized students.
Since graduating law school, Mark has spent much of his time getting involved with civic engagement and mentorship. He spent the summer and fall working on a city council campaign and is a member of the SPARK Boston Council. The SPARK Boston Council advises the Mayor on City policies and programs affecting 20- to 34-year-olds. He also mentors LGBTQ youth of color in the City of Boston. He believes that through civic engagement and mentorship that he can represent people often not represented in policy making decisions and help give more people a seat at the table, or if absolutely necessary, flip the table over and build their own. When he's not worrying about office furniture, you can find him cuddling with his (roommate's) cat, searching for Boston's best margarita or screaming about the greatness of Dolly Parton to anyone that will listen... or anyone that won't listen.
